Singapore to Fund Half of Construction Robot Leasing Costs

Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has introduced a new scheme designed to lower the financial barrier to leasing robotics equipment in the construction sector. Announced on September 2, the Robot Leasing Support Scheme will provide up to 50% co-funding toward the cost of leasing proven robotics and automation solutions.

The funding will be channelled through the existing Built Environment Technology and Capability grant. Rather than requiring construction firms to buy machines outright, the scheme is structured around leasing arrangements, letting companies access equipment such as concrete levelling robots and tile grouting machines without the upfront capital expense of purchase.

According to BCA, the initiative directly targets the cost barrier that has historically discouraged smaller construction companies from adopting automation. By subsidising leasing rather than ownership, the scheme is intended to widen access to robotics technology across the industry, not just among larger firms with more capital available.

The move builds on Singapore's existing grant support for robotics in construction and comes in response to rising demand for leasing options among industry players. BCA framed the scheme as part of a broader national push to boost productivity in the built environment through automation, noting that robotic systems can take on repetitive tasks and reduce the manpower required for certain jobs.

Alongside the leasing scheme, BCA said it is considering another round of its Built Environment Accelerate to Market programme, which helps shift technologies that have succeeded in trials into broader industry use. The authority is also introducing virtual inspections across government agencies, a measure it said could shorten approval timelines for Temporary Occupation Permits and Certificates of Statutory Completion by as much as two months.

Taken together, the measures reflect Singapore's continued effort to embed more technology into construction workflows, with the leasing subsidy specifically aimed at making robotics financially viable for companies that might otherwise avoid the upfront cost of purchasing equipment. By easing entry through leasing rather than ownership, BCA is positioning cost-sharing as a key lever for expanding automation adoption industry-wide.
